Psalms Commentary

Psalms 2

Psalms 2:2-3, "The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us."

The kings (leaders) of the earth conspire against God's people. Many think that this means world leaders such as the presidents, prime ministers and other officials of nations. But that is not necessarily so. There are many levels of leaders. Leaders in businesses can do the same thing. I have actually seen it done at that level. Why do they do this? It is because the unGodly view those that are Godly as inhibitors of their way of life.

What indicates this? The word "bands" means, in Strong's H04147, "chastisement that is (by implication) a halter; figuratively restraint". The meaning, as applied to verse 3 is, "Let's get rid of their restraints." This brings to mind the phrases, "You're cramping my style" and "lose your inhibitions". It is also interesting that the root of "bands", which is Strong's H03256, means "to chastise literally (with blows) or figuratively (with words); hence to instruct."

People don't like to be corrected and the evil view the Godly as people who correct them for their evils ways. How is that done? Not necessarily by those who preach on television or stand on the pulpit. It is true that television preachers can do that but the real issue comes when the unGodly are reminded of their evil ways on a day-to-day basis. How? It is done by they way the Godly live. The Godly refuse to get involved in the ways of the world which are the ways of evil. Matthew 5:13-16 shows how that is done.

Psalms 2:5, "Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure."

I have heard a lot about God's anger or wrath and it has been in one of two extremes. The most prevalent is with the meaning of God's wrath being one of destruction. The focus of God's wrath will "go to hell" or be punished or something of that nature. That is what is most prevalent in the Protestant world. I will not speak to the Muslim religion because the god they worship doesn't resemble the true God in any fashion whatsoever. The other extreme is not as prevalent but still, does not sync with statements made in the Word of God. It is the concept that God does not really get angry.

This verse clearly says that He does get angry (not that I want him to be angry with me). However, notice how He handles His anger. He does not destroy. He speaks to them in His anger but He does make them afraid. "Vex" is Strong's H00926 which means "to tremble" or "make alarmed". So He makes them scared.
